The Biggest Lie in History

The Biggest Lie in History
Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be the Whole of the Law Part 1
By Daniel Shultz

            The original sin of Adam and Eve was based on their false belief that they would not die if they disobeyed God.
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Since this original sin so many people have fallen prey to the same sin: That if they merely assert their position of independence from God’s law that they will face no repercussions for their actions. In this sinful rebellion from God’s law man seeks to usurp God’s position of judge of what is right and wrong.

This false belief permeates Modern culture teaching us that the highest good in life is to “believe in yourself” or  “do what your heart tells you.” Even Christians have fallen prey to the lie of self-belief. Arguably the most popular preacher in the United States Joel Osteen has said things like this:
“Believe in yourself. You have something to offer this world that nobody else does! Ask God today to show you how you can benefit others with your talents, gifts and experiences that He's given you.”
On the surface this quote seems okay it even mentions God and his gifts, but look at that first sentence again “Believe in yourself.” This idea that Man merely needs to believe in himself and then life will fall into place around him is an absolutely foreign concept to the bible and historic orthodox Christianity.  In fact the bible teaches that human nature is absolutely corrupt and total unable to do anything good. As found in Jeremiah:

"The heart is deceitful above all things,

and desperately sick;

who can understand it"? Jeremiah 17:9

In Romans 3:10-18

  as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;
    no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;

no one does good,
not even one.”
“Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.”

“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
    “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
    in their paths are ruin and misery,
and the way of peace they have not known.”
    “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Or in the words of Jesus himself:
"For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. Matthew" 15:19
The bible clearly teaches that man is desperately wicked and that they themselves are the cause of the world's problems. Their corrupt hearts lead them to commit sin; murder, adultery, and theft all come from the heart, the very thing that we are told to trust. Instead of believing the original lie, and committing the original sin over again let us look to what scripture says.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
    and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will make straight your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6
